Tethered vs Untethered EV Chargers: Which Is Right for Your Home?
Once you've decided to get a home EV charger installed, the next question is usually which one. Beyond the standard 7kW power rating, there are a few real choices that affect how the charger looks, how convenient it is day to day, and what it can do — tethered or untethered, smart features, and whether it can talk to a home solar system. Here's what actually matters when choosing.
Tethered vs Untethered — What's the Difference?
A tethered charger has the charging cable permanently attached to the unit. A untethered charger (sometimes called a "socket" charger) has a socket on the front, and you plug in your own separate charging cable — usually the one that came with your car.
Cable built in
Grab the cable and plug straight into your car — no separate lead to find, store or carry. Best for households with one EV that stays the same.
Socket only
Neater when not in use, and works with any Type 2 cable — useful if you might change vehicles, have more than one EV, or want to keep the cable in the car.
Neither is objectively "better" — it comes down to how you'll actually use it. If your charger is somewhere on show, like a driveway close to the house, a lot of people prefer the tidiness of untethered with the cable stored in the boot. If it's tucked in a garage or side return and only ever charging one car, tethered is usually the more convenient day-to-day choice.
Smart Charging Features Worth Having
Almost every charger we install now is a "smart" charger — one that connects to Wi-Fi or 4G and can be controlled from an app. A few features are worth knowing about before you choose a model.
Scheduled and off-peak charging
Smart chargers let you set charging to start automatically once cheaper overnight electricity rates kick in, rather than drawing power the moment you plug in. If you're on an EV-specific tariff, this is usually where most of the running-cost saving comes from.
Load balancing (dynamic load management)
Load balancing automatically reduces the charger's output if the rest of the house is drawing a lot of power at the same time, so the property's main fuse isn't overloaded. It's particularly relevant on older supplies or properties with a limited main fuse rating, and we'll assess whether it's needed as part of any EV charger quote.
Solar diversion
Some smart chargers — the myenergi Zappi is a well-known example — can prioritise using surplus electricity generated by home solar panels to charge the car before importing from the grid. If you already have, or are planning, solar panels, it's worth mentioning this when getting a quote, as it affects which charger model suits you best.

Which Should You Choose?
- One car, fixed spot: tethered is usually the more convenient day-to-day option.
- Street parking, multiple vehicles, or you like a tidy look: untethered gives you more flexibility.
- On an EV tariff: make sure app-based scheduling is included as standard — it is on most modern smart chargers.
- Have or planning solar panels: ask specifically about solar diversion compatibility.
- Older consumer unit or limited main fuse: ask about load balancing during your quote.
