What We Diagnose

Is this what’s happening?

We trace and repair a wide range of electrical faults in domestic and commercial properties across Darlington and the North East.

RCD / MCB Keeps Tripping

A circuit breaker or RCD that repeatedly trips back to off indicates a fault on that circuit — either an overload, a wiring fault or a failing appliance.

Investigate promptly

Loss of Power

Sockets, lights or whole areas of the property suddenly have no power. Could be a blown fuse, tripped circuit, loose connection or a deeper wiring fault.

Investigate promptly

Flickering or Failing Lights

Lights that flicker, dim unexpectedly or stop working altogether. Can indicate loose wiring, a failing connection or an issue with the circuit supplying them.

Worth investigating

Dead Sockets or Switches

Sockets or switches that have stopped working. Often caused by a faulty accessory, loose terminal or a break in the circuit wiring behind the wall.

Worth investigating

Intermittent Faults

Problems that come and go — occasionally tripping, lights that work sometimes, sockets that cut out. Often the hardest to trace but our test equipment helps pinpoint them.

Diagnosed with testing

Burning Smell or Warm Outlets

A burning smell near a socket, switch or consumer unit — or outlets that feel warm to the touch — should never be ignored. Switch off and call us immediately.

Why Act Fast

Electrical faults don’t fix themselves

A minor fault left unattended often becomes a more serious — and more expensive — problem. What starts as a tripping circuit can become damaged wiring, and what starts as a flickering light can be an early sign of a connection failure.

1
Minor fault noticed A circuit trips occasionally or a socket feels warm. Small inconvenience at this stage.
2
Fault worsens undetected The underlying cause continues. Wiring may be damaged further, connections deteriorate.
3
Costly repair or safety risk What could have been a quick fix becomes a major repair — or worse, a fire or shock risk.

How We Find It

Our diagnostic process

We use a systematic approach and calibrated test equipment to locate the cause — not just the symptom.

Tell us what’s happening

Call or message us with the symptoms — circuit tripping, no power, a burning smell or flickering lights. We’ll ask the right questions to build a picture before we visit.

2

Site visit & visual inspection

We inspect the consumer unit, circuits and affected accessories. Sometimes a visual check is enough to spot the obvious cause — a burnt connection, a failed component or an overloaded circuit.

Electrical testing

Using insulation resistance testers, loop impedance testers and other calibrated equipment, we test circuits systematically to narrow down where the fault lies — even intermittent ones.

4

Fault located & explained

Once the fault is found we explain exactly what the issue is and what’s required to fix it. No work starts until you understand the problem and agree to the repair.

Repair & certification

The fault is repaired and tested to confirm the issue is resolved. A Minor Works Certificate is issued where required on completion.

FAQ

Common questions

What is electrical fault finding?

Electrical fault finding is the process of diagnosing the cause of a problem within an electrical installation — such as tripping circuits, power loss, faulty sockets or flickering lights — using systematic testing and specialist equipment.

Can you trace intermittent faults?

Yes. Intermittent faults are often the hardest to find because they don’t happen consistently. We use insulation resistance and loop impedance testing to identify underlying weaknesses in the circuit, even when the fault isn’t actively showing.

How long does fault finding take?

It depends on the fault. Simple issues can be found and fixed in under an hour. Complex or intermittent faults in larger properties may take longer. We’ll always give you an honest estimate of the time involved before we start.

Do you charge separately for fault finding and repair?

We charge for the diagnosis and then quote separately for any repair work. We won’t start a repair without your agreement on the cost first.

Do you cover areas outside Darlington?

Yes — we cover Darlington, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Newton Aycliffe, Durham, Hartlepool and the wider North East. Call to confirm your area.
