If you've recently bought an electric vehicle — or you're planning to — installing a home charger is one of the best investments you can make. Charging at home overnight is far cheaper and more convenient than relying on public charge points. But how much does it actually cost?
For most homes in Darlington and the North East, a 7kW home EV charger installation starts from around £450, fully installed and certified.

These are guide prices. Every installation is different and you'll always get a fixed price before any work starts.
The charger needs to be wired back to your consumer unit. If the charger is going in a garage or driveway close to the house, this is usually straightforward. If there's a longer cable run involved, or if it needs to go underground, the cost will be higher.
Your existing consumer unit needs a spare way for the charger circuit. If it's full, or if it needs upgrading to accommodate the new load, this adds to the cost. This is something we check during a quote visit.
Most home installations use a 7kW smart charger — this is the sweet spot for home charging and will fully charge most EVs overnight. Some people opt for a 3.6kW charger which costs slightly less but takes twice as long to charge.
Modern smart chargers allow you to schedule charging at off-peak electricity rates, monitor usage and control the charger via an app. Most installations now use smart chargers as standard — they don't add significantly to the cost and make a big difference to running costs.
How much will charging at home save me? Charging a typical EV overnight at home costs roughly £3–£5 using a standard domestic tariff — versus £15–£25 for the same charge at a public rapid charger. The charger typically pays for itself within a year for regular drivers.

You don't need to notify your energy supplier before installing a home charger, but it's worth checking your tariff. Many suppliers now offer EV-specific tariffs with cheaper overnight rates that can significantly reduce charging costs.
